Springsteen’s America

Music can be a powerful inspiration for a photographer, and Bruce Springsteen’s songs offered a vivid guide for this project. His lyrics are rich with imagery, capturing the struggles of working-class America, the crisis of the middle class, the fractured American Dream, and the deep social divides of the country.

Springsteen’s characters are workers in car washes, repair shops, supermarkets, laundromats, and factories—people trapped in uninspiring jobs, chasing the American Dream of a better life for their children. But for many, that promise is broken.

His stories unfold in familiar places—darkened houses, highways that stretch endlessly, and cramped cars that are both prisons and symbols of freedom. The night is their escape, a time to pack, to drive, to hope. They are never alone; escape is a journey best made in pairs, with women at the heart of their world.

This project captures those stories and themes, forty years after Springsteen wrote his songs. The images show how the American Dream has changed—its hopes, its struggles, and its enduring pull.
